Group Rationale for a group of 4: Craig, Jenny, Sula and Jenny
As a mutually
supportive group brought together by our aesthetic, social, and
environmental values: We wish to curate an immersive and cohesive
arrangement of our works. Our complementary practices use the natural
world to provide source material for making environmentally sensitive
pieces. We take inspiration from landscape and organic forms, bringing
our sculptures together to reinforce these ideas. Collaborating in an open room
allows the work to resonate with the viewer, enabling them to be immersed in a holistic
experience of place.
Why
Studio 58?
Studio 58
is the culminatory articulation of Mackintosh’s journey from dark to light
evident throughout the building: we see this as a metaphor for enlightenment
which parallels our educational journey through art school. We feel this room,
more than any other within the Mac’ building, conveys our aesthetic concerns as
well as ensuring the practical requirements for our work. This
space is rarely viewed without enclosing studio walls, we wish to explore the
potential of this room, honouring the original architecture.
Architectural
Aesthetic
Light
- Open, Light and
Airy- feeling of the outdoors.
- The light in
this room allows natural materials to be viewed with their true colours,
unchanged by electric lighting.
- Changing light
throughout the day connects the space and the work with Earth’s cycles creating
a calm, contemplative space.
- Mackintosh
intended transition between dark and light within the space.
Natural Forms
- A room wider
than it is high- mirroring the landscape format.
- Open
architectural space gives a feeling of being within a landscape, allowing
the viewer to take a natural journey through the works.
- Beams and
pillars allude to trees
“The tree is the conduit of the earth-water-air cycle as well as being
the archetypal cultural image of transformation from dark to light, underworld
to heaven” Chris Drury
- Potential to
reveal the water-bearer plaster casts that are behind the studio walls.
Practical
Requirements
- Natural light
- Open space
- Accessible
windowsills for placing work
- Beams allow for
the suspension of objects
- Power sockets
Co-operation/Compromise
We
understand that we will need to negotiate these plans with the other students
in the room and are make compromises to accommodate their needs.
Proposed layout 1
If the others sharing the space agreed to an open plan with no walls this would be our ideal layout.
If the others sharing the space agreed to an open plan with no walls this would be our ideal layout.
Proposed layout 2
If the
others sharing the space with us do not want an open plan then we would propose
using a section of the room and giving the others free reign.
